U.S. Imports require a U.S. Federal Identification Number, also known as a Employer Identification Number (FEIN) or IRS number. CBP will also accept a Social Security Number for a personal importation. If the company is a company registered to do business in the U.S, then they have a FEIN. If the company is a “non-resident importer” — meaning that they do not do business in the U.S., then CBP will issue them a CBP assigned importer number. The instructions to get a CBP assigned number is provided at www.cbp.gov. (Non-resident importers usually are clearing goods using the Incoterm “Delivered Duty Paid” which means they are responsible to deliver the goods to the named place, duty paid. Thus, non-resident importers are responsible to perform all customs formalities including payment of duties, taxes and fees on the imported goods and making arrangements to deliver the goods to the purchaser. A non-resident importer must have either a continuous or single entry bond on file to support the transaction with CBP.)
